Meet the Advocates

Heidy Berthoud
heberthoud@vassar.edu

Where are you from originally?  I'm originally from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

When did you start working at Vassar and in what position/area of specialty?  I started working as a librarian at Vassar in December 2012.

What compelled you to join the SART team? I'm a House Fellow in Strong, and SART was an opportunity for me to learn more about campus resources and give something back to the community.

What do you enjoy to do in your spare time?  I like reading, knitting, binge watching media content, and playing with my cats, Sherlock and Watson.

What is a funny quirk about you? I'm very good at impressions. I played the Wicked Witch of the West my senior year of high school because I could imitate the voice really well, but my favorite (and most unexpected) impression is Eric Cartman from South Park.

When did you start working at Vassar and in what position/area of specialty? She has been at Vassar College since September 2016 as the Violence Prevention Educator in the Sexual Assault and Violence Prevention office.

What compelled you to join the SART team? Nicole joined SART because she believes in the importance of making help more accessible, whether a student needs crisis services or simply to have a question answered.

What do you enjoy to do in your spare time? In her free time, Nicole enjoys rock climbing and yoga, but not as much as she enjoys playing with her dog, Shadow.

When did you start working at Vassar and in what position/area of specialty?  I started teaching at Vassar in 2000.  My specialty is modern British and imperial history with a focus on gender and the history of childhood.

What compelled you to join the SART team? As a professor and later as Director of Women's Studies, I saw that student survivors needed greater support navigating College resources and advocating for improvements.

What do you enjoy to do in your spare time? I enjoy yoga, running, baking cupcakes, and, especially when I want to yell with joy, watching my sons play soccer, baseball, and basketball.

What compelled you to join the SART team?   After being a House Fellow I wanted to continue supporting Vassar students in meaningful way.

What do you enjoy to do in your spare time?  I don't have much spare time - I am also earning a degree!

What is a funny quirk about you (if you would like to share)?  I have changed my profession 4 times so far.  You never know!

Arianna Schlegal
arschlegel@vassar.edu

Where are you from originally? Farmington, CT.

When did you start working at Vassar and in what position/area of specialty? My first job at Vassar was in 2000, when I was a student - I was a lab & research assistant with the Computer Science department. I also spent one winter working in the Art Library. Then I returned in 2014 to work as the Metadata & Systems Librarian.

What compelled you to join the SART team? I wanted to do more than just work here as part of the Vassar community, and this team is so important to the well-being of the campus.

What do you enjoy to do in your spare time? Right now, most of my extracurricular time is taken up by my daughter Fiona, who was born in March 2016. When I'm not chasing her, though, I am an avid reader, knitter, and baker. I also really like to hike and go to movies.

Charlotte Strauss Swanson
chstraussswanson@vassar.edu

Where are you from originally? Brooklyn, NY.

When did you start working at Vassar and in what position/area of specialty? I started working at Vassar in 2014 and work as the Director of the Sexual Assault and Violence Prevention Office.

What compelled you to join the SART team? I strongly believe in the importance of accessible, private, survivor-centered support/advocacy services for those impacted by interpersonal violence.

What do you enjoy to do in your spare time? I love to hike, bike, travel and knit!

Tracy Wright-Mauer
trwrightmauer@vassar.edu

Where are you from originally? I was born in northern NJ and grew up in Liverpool N.Y. but consider myself from Buffalo after moving there to go to college and staying for the next decade.

When did you start working at Vassar and in what position/area of specialty? I started working at Vassar in 2007 as the Library book conservator.

What compelled you to join the SART team? A very close family member of mine was sexually assaulted and after going through the original trauma, legal proceedings and ongoing recovery of that incident with them I wanted to continue to advocate for and support other survivors so they don't have to go through it alone.

What do you enjoy to do in your spare time? I row, a lot, but I also love to hike, ride my bike, ski, dance, read, watch movies, listen to music and see as many live bands as possible.

What is a funny quirk about you? I try something new that pushes my boundaries of comfort every year.
