SART
(Sexual Assault Response Team): Members of SART serve, individually and as a coordinated
group, to provide support, advocacy and information for victims of sexual assault,
relationship abuse, and stalking on campus. Together, members of SART will serve to
provide these resources consistently throughout the period that the victim requests this
support, recognizing that a main goal of SART members is to help victims reach out to the
many resources both on and off campus that exist to help them. SART members are not
themselves counselors or experts in sexual assault, but they are extensively trained to
provide information and personal help in accessing appropriate resources.
Upon initial contact with a victim, SART members will:
-
Offer information about resources that the victim might use to address personal,
medical, psychological, and safety concerns related to the incident.
-
Provide guidance on procedures to be followed and names to be contacted for gaining
rapid access to these resources.
-
Offer to make initial contacts with resource providers and to introduce victims to
appropriate contact people, both on and off campus, as the victim wishes.
-
Clarify distinctions between campus and civil adjudication procedures and offer to
help victim make initial contacts with appropriate offices on campus (Sexual Assault
& Violence Prevention ¬ SAVP ¬ coordinator) or off campus (Rape Crisis Center, District
AttorneyÌs Office and/or Town of Poughkeepsie Police), if victim is interested in
pursuing legal channels.
-
Serve as a liaison with other members of SART who may share more extensive knowledge
of particular resources that the victim is interested in pursuing.
-
Remain in close contact with the SAVP coordinator to ensure a coordinated, timely
and appropriate support system for the victim.
